The District of Sicamous is ready to bloom.

Communities in Bloom co-ordinator Deb Heap gave council an update on the initiative, touching on the main highlights. The application has been submitted to the provincial committee, with judging expected to take place in Sicamous the third week of July.

In preparation for that, Heap and her group have been identifying some specific projects, with one of those being the legion cenotaph and frontage.

“It will improve the curb appeal of the legion and the look of Main Street,” she explained, adding that they’re also looking at the beach park as another key location.

Heap also reported that local high school students have agreed to give their time to build 10 benches in a few different styles to be installed around town, with the materials likely all being donated as well.

“We’re getting some really lovely street furniture at basically no cost,” she told council, though she said she is most excited at getting kids involved in the initiative.

That, she said, is one of the main goals of the project; not only beautifying the town but also getting residents of all ages involved.

“Communities in Bloom is about having a vision for the community and making it better in every way, and involving the community in doing that,” Heap said.

While not everyone has a green thumb or the time to give to the project, an account has been established at the district where donations can be made, either as a general gift or for a specific project, such as the legion plan which already has $600 dedicated to it.
