The NDP have now joined the race for Vernon-Monashee.

Teacher Barry Dorval won the party nomination Sunday over nurse Harwinder Sandhu, and he will carry the NDP banner in the May provincial election.

“Here in Vernon, people’s costs are going up,” Dorval said.

“Christy Clark gives her wealthy friends tax breaks while she increases ICBC and Hydro rates for ordinary people. Christy Clark isn’t working for you. The decisions she is making are hurting our community. Her choices threaten our kids’ schools, make our health care suffer and neglect seniors in our community.”

Dorval says he’s passionate about protecting health and seniors care, and making child care affordable for young families.

“Seniors, children and everyday working people deserve a government that is making things better, not harder.”

Dorval moved to Vernon in 1999 with his family and he has been active with Trinity United Church and Mackenzie Camp.

“Barry Dorval brings a strong voice for people in Vernon-Monashee to our B.C. NDP team,” said leader John Horgan.

“He has what it takes to help defeat Christy Clark and to build a better B.C. It’s time for a government that works for everyday people.”

Also running in Vernon-Monashee are Liberal incumbent Eric Foster, Green Keli Westgate and Libertarian Don Jefcoat.
