Fisheries backs away from development oversight

Federal department says it no longer has the resources to provide input on development projects.

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District  board of directors received correspondence stating the Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) no longer has the resources to provide input on development projects.

According to the correspondence, the DFO will no longer review bylaw referrals at their Salmon Arm field office. As a result the onus will now be on the developer to ensure their project complies with relevant legislation.

The board of directors discussed the possibility of writing a letter expressing their disappointment and asking them to reassess their decision but decided against it, citing their lack of positive results in the past.
