Many Shuswap properties are littered with debris following a wild windstorm on Tuesday, May 23. Columbia Shuswap Regional District landfill sites and transfer stations has extended the annual, free spring residential yard and garden waste event until end-of-day Sunday, June 4.

The bad news is that Tuesday night’s storm tossed debris onto many people’s properties.

The good news is, residents can dispose of their yard and garden waste for free until Sunday, June 4.

All landfill sites and transfer stations within the Columbia Shuswap Regional District will accept leaves, weeds, grass clippings and tree limbs up to eight inches in diameter – from residential properties only, says Environmental Health team leader Ben Van Nostrand.

The regional district’s annual free disposal event for yard and garden waste began April 15 and has been extended until end-of-day Sunday, June 4 because of the windstorm.

Metal waste is also accepted through the free disposal program, but Van Nostrand notes items such as freezers, fridges and air conditioners that contain freon are subject to a $15 freon removal charge.

The Salmon Arm Landfill site is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. In Sicamous, the landfill is open Friday through Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For hours of operation at other CSRD landifll sites and transfer stations, go to www.csrd.bc.ca, click on “Services” and go down to “Landfill Sites and Transfer Stations.”

Van Nostrand reminds landfill and transfer station users that the cost to dispose of garbage goes up $1 per bag to $3 as of July 1.

Van Nostrand says an earlier proposal to initiate a $5 user fee drew a lot of negative feedback and was dismissed in favour of the $1-per-bag increase, which has received a more favourable response.

The cost to dispose of a truckload of waste goes from $70 a ton to $80 and a load of mixed garbage increases from $140 to $160. Yard and garden waste and metal waste remain at $35 per ton.
