UPDATE: Jack-knifed semi closes highway

Motorists report traffic is begining to crawl northbound, indicating some traffic is being allowed around the accident site.

DriveBC is estimating the a single northbound lane of Highway 97 will reopen about noon.

UPDATE: 9:42 a.m.

The southbound lanes of Highway 97 are now reopened 500 metres north of the junction with Highway 97C. However northbound lanes remain closed.

UPDATE: 9:16 a.m.

Police are confirming a semi-tractor trailer unit and an SUV collided on Highway 97between Glenrosa Road and the Highway 97C interchange at about 7:55 a.m.

According to Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, information provided from the scene suggeststhat the northbound commercial vehicle may have jack knifed, colliding with thecentre median concrete barriers which then struck an SUV travelling in the oppositedirection.

“Initial details from the scene also suggest that no serious injuries were sustainedin the crash,” stated O’Donaghey in a release.

Highway 97 remains closed in both directions at this time while crews work to clearthe scene of damaged vehicles and debris. Crews at the scene estimate the closureto last one to two hours.

Update: 9 a.m.

Motorists stuck between Peachland and West Kelowna on Highway 97 might have to wait two to four hours before the road will reopen, following a morning collision.

DriveBC is reporting an assessment is underway and there is no detour available.

Peachland and West Kelowna residents should be prepared for a long commute in as traffic is reportedly backed up in several spots on the west side.

Traffic is at a stopped northbound from the intersection of Highway 97 and Highway 97C to well past Gorman’s Mill.

A semi-trailer truck heading north is reportedly jack-knifed just past Gorman’s, closing the highway in both directions.

Traffic is now backed up well into Peachland.

Roads in the area are reportedly treacherous, wet and icy with heavy snow.

There is also heavy backups along Highway 97 between Westbank and Boucherie Road.

Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.
