The cause of a Spallumcheen fire is still unknown.

Investigators are trying to determine what led to the fire on the hillside above Highway 97A and Hutley Road Aug. 10.

“It’s still undetermined at this point and it could stay that way,” said Ian Cummings, Armstrong-Spallumcheen fire chief, who won’t speculate on the cause.

“We can’t pinpoint the ignition source yet.”

While the blaze is contained, firefighters are tackling hot spots.

“The guys have been working hard. There’s been a presence up there full-time,” said Cummings, adding that it could take time for the hot spots to be extinguished and then the site will be monitored after that.

“Root systems burn underground and they can pop up.”

Along with Armstrong-Spallumcheen, there has been assistance from BX-Swan Lake, Enderby, Lumby and the B.C. Wildfire Service.

“Everyone has been fantastic,” said Cummings.
