District financial support will help get upcoming ball tournaments to home plate.

Sicamous Minor Softball president Jake Dewitt presented council with a funding request of $3,500 to help cover costs of three events taking place in Finlayson Park this summer; the Ladies Fastball Tournament on May 28-29, the Ladies C Tournament which is set for June 24-25 and the Men’s Provincial Softball Championship which will run July 28-30.

Coun. Gord Bushell voiced his support of the initiative, saying Dewitt and his team have been doing a stellar job and, though it’s not included in the funding request, have managed to secure a softball camp that is moving to Sicamous from Kelowna and will see 120 girls housed in the Sicamous rec centre July 31 to Aug. 5.

“Jake’s doing a great job and I’m looking forward to watching this stuff,” Mayor Terry Rysz added before the motion passed unanimously.

The approved funding will go towards housing and feeding game officials, as well as field preparations for all three tournaments.
