Top marks: Thompson Rivers University business and economics student Bianca Dewitt has received a $5

The first year of university couldn’t have ended better for Bianca Dewitt.

Dewitt is now back home in Sicamous after completing a busy first semester at Thompson Rivers University, where she’s pursuing a degree in business and economics. She was able to finish the year with an excellent 4.29 grade point average (GPA), having scored a perfect 4.33 in the second term. This achievement did not go unnoticed. To her surprise, Dewitt was chosen to receive a 2011 Alvin and Lydia Grunert Scholarship to the tune of $5,000 in recognition of her having achieved the highest undergraduate GPA in the entire School of Business and Economics.

“Acceptance of this scholarship will publicly recognize your academic excellence, and provide opportunity to associate with other top achievers at the university in the coming year,” says a letter to Dewitt from TRU financial manager Gordon Down.

Bianca and Melanie interpret this in a more humble manner:

“Now she’s allowed to associate with the brains in the school,” laughs Melanie.

That said, Melanie is thrilled with her daughter’s accomplishment, knowing it didn’t come easy.

“It was pretty sweet when she did win it because she works awfully hard,” says Melanie, adding Bianca will likely be tutoring when she returns to university in September.
