Helping fill dwindling stocks of food at local food banks has never been more fun.

In response to the fact that food given to food banks in the lead up to Christmas often does not last through the whole winter season, the Shuswap Family Centre and Cedar Axe Throwing teamed up to present the first Fill the Pantry February. With help from local businesses they put on a six week long food drive and finished it off with a day of fun and games on Feb. 17, that included axe throwing and road hockey with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks.

According to organizer Dale Coulombe, 600lbs of donated food was collected and following this year’s success it is hoped that 1000lbs could be raised next year. Donations were collected by nine local businesses and community organizations with prizes going to the top donors.

First and second place went to Jacobson Ford and the Women Who Wine group, each of them will be receiving a free two-hour axe throwing rental from Cedar Axe Throwing. Third place Jungle Mania won a VR gaming package for four people at the Arc Gaming Centre. Shuswap Coffee Company will be getting a pizza party sponsored by the Shuswap Family Centre for their fourth place finish; the coffee company also provided a coffee prize pack which will be going to the fifth place Scotiabank.
