The Salmon Arm Observer is looking to hear more from our community members and is interested in finding out what they love about Salmon Arm and the Shuswap.

We are profiling different residents for our community section, by asking them to answer a list of questions about Salmon Arm and the Shuswap and why they think it is so great.

This week we are profiling Isabelle Gervais, who has lived in Salmon Arm for more than 25 years.

Gervais is a parent of six daughters, and grandmother of three. She’s also the well-know principal at Bastion Elementary.

“When I’m not working, you can find me working in my garden or greenhouse, camping or hiking the trails,” she says.

And what does she think of the Shuswap?

When someone says ‘the Shuswap’ what’s the first thing that comes to mind?

The natural beautiful of the area and the ability to get out in nature within minutes. I also love the variety of activities and events related to the arts and recreation in the area.

If you could change or improve one thing about your community what would it be?

More opportunities for young families to find work in our community. There are still too many families who choose to live here yet one parent needs to work out of town in order to make it feasible.

What’s your favourite local company?

Eco Treats is a new business. A fun place to meet friends over tea or coffee and to enjoy some good food.

What are the top three places you would recommend that tourists visit when they are in Salmon Arm?

The Wharf is a classic and a wonderful place to visit anytime of the year. A wonderful setting for the WOW Concert series in the summer. I also suggest that they visit some of or local trails as there are many right within Salmon Arm. Finally the art gallery is a true treasure and with their ever-changing displays. Its a great way to highlight the artistic talent in the Shuswap.

What do you see for the community in 20 years?

I think we will see lots of growth, but hopefully we can maintain that small-town feel; a place where people young and young at heart can flourish.

We are looking to profile as many community members as possible. If you would like to be profiled or if you would like to nominate someone please click on this link and fill out the questionnaire.
