Dance remembers Eric Nelson

It’s an old-time family dance for a good cause. On December 10 the Salmar is organizing a memorial dance with the proceeds going to the Eric Nelson scholarship fund.

“On Dec. 10 it will be a year since Eric left us,” says Salmar general manager Daila Duford. “We wanted to have something for the community to do, something that he really would have liked.”

Nelson, who passed away suddenly at the age of 56, was a well known and respected long-time projectionist at both the Salmar Classic and Salmar Grand movie theatres. At the time of his passing Duford described him as being not so much an employee, but an integral part of Salmar family.

The memorial dance will be held at the Salmon Arm Curling Club from 6 pm – 10 pm. so it’s convenient for families to attend.

“We have a DJ – The Gentleman, Alex Mathys. From 6 -7 he’s going to have music from the 60s, from 7-8 he’s going to have music from the 80s, from 8-9 he’s going to have music from the 80s, he’s going to have music from each era.”

There will be chili, snacks and a cash bar.

Tickets are available at both theatres. If there are tickets left on Dec. 10 they will sell some at the door but Duford is hoping to have a sell-out crowd before that.

“This is the first big actual memorial event – one year to the day. His daughter is flying out for it so that’s really neat.”

Tickets are $5 and all the proceeds are go to the scholarship fund which is set up for a Salmon Arm Secondary student who is going into trades.

“That’s just what Eric was – a jack of all trades. He could do anything – he was amazing at that, and he was really gunning for kids who weren’t super scholastic but had hands-on talent.”
