After a suggestion from a local resident, Sicamous council will explore options for accessibility for the mobility challenged at the Beach Park.

Life's a beach, and a Sicamous resident would like to see everyone able to enjoy it.

In a letter to council received at the Aug. 28 meeting, clinical exercise physiologist Dwight Templeton asked about the possibility of installing a ramp to the beach at the Beach Park to make it more accessible to individuals in wheelchairs and families with strollers.

"In the event of an emergency it would also provide a safer access point for emergency personnel versus the large steps (cement blocks) currently in place," he wrote.

While council was very receptive to the suggestion, Mayor Colleen Anderson pointed out the subject has come up before but the fluctuating level of the lake posed a problem as it drops so much throughout the summer.

"That was the biggest challenge," operations manager Darrell Symbaluk agreed. "It would have to be explored a bit."

Council opted to leave it with him to research some options and report back.

"I would love to see that happen for our beach," Coun. Bob Evans stated, agreeing with Coun. Siobhan Rich's suggestion to at least make the steps smaller to make access easier for the elderly and mobility challenged in the meantime.
