The Shuswap will be well represented when it comes to swimming at the upcoming BC Summer Games.
For the multi-sport event being held July 19 to 21 in Maple Ridge, the Thompson-Okanagan region is able to send 20 swimmers to compete. One-quarter of them will be members of the Columbia Shuswap Selkirks Swim Club.
Selkirks swimmers to attend the games, from Salmon Arm, include Finn Skofteby, Dane Bach, Felix Leyenhorst, Marrin Harwood and Nicola Louw, with Mckenzie McKnight named as an alternate.
Swimmers must be between the ages of 12-14 and are selected for the team based on how fast their swim times are. Coach Barry Healey attributes the high percentage of local swimmers on the regional team to the hard work he’s seeing in practice.
“The kids have been setting goals and are improving on something every day,” commented Healey in a media release. Their level of commitment and dedication is exemplary. They are in the pool 6 days a week and sometimes twice a day.”
Before the BC Summer Games, the entire Selkirks team still has four separate swim meets scheduled including an open water meet as well as two championship meets. Healey is looking forward to the next two months and seeing what
the kids can do.
“Ten different swimmers have broken over 50 club records so far this year; I’d love to see some more fall,” said Healey.
