The Shuswap Trail Alliance (STA) is reminding people to be bear aware when using Salmon Arm trails.

In a friendly reminder shared through its Tuesday, July 16 Trails Update, the STA said it has been receiving reports of bear sightings, including repeated reports of a mother bear and cub hanging out at the popular Little Mountain Park trail system. Repeated reports have also been received about a mother bear with a cub at the Park Hill trails, south of Canoe Beach, and of a mother and two cubs in the Raven area.

"Please keep dogs on leashes and under control and be bear aware," said the STA, which also reminded residents to follow the city's bylaw for curbside garbage and compost collection, which prohibits placing bins and bags at the curb prior to 7 a.m. on collection days.

"This is essential to minimize attracting wildlife into residential areas, keep residents safe and protect wildlife from harm," explains the city's website.

Section 33.1(2) of B.C.'s Wildlife Act specifies that possible wildlife attractants such as garbage, food waste and recycling are not to be placed in an area where they are accessible to dangerous wildlife, and risk attracting dangerous wildlife to the premises.
