Council supports grant for Malakwa Learning Academy

Funding application will go to Columbia Shuswap Regional District board for approval.

earning Academy is one step closer to getting $50,000 from the Economic Opportunity Fund.

The fund was created by BC Hydro to compensate municipalities and regional districts affected by the construction of Mica Dam near Revelstoke.

In order to access funds, both the municipality and electoral area must agree on the proposal.

In this case, Sicamous councillors unanimously supported the request made by Electoral Area E Rural Sicamous director Rhona Martin.

Malakwa Learning Academy works in partnership with Self Design Learning Community, a class 1 Independent Distributed Learning School, to provide educational programs from grades K-7.

“We supported Rhona,” said Sicamous Mayor Terry Rysz, noting the regional district in general, Area E and the District of Sicamous are building a very good relationship and the request for funding was merited.

“This is something I felt strongly about; that academy has a lot of functions that are very important to that little town.”

The funding request will go to Columbia Shuswap Regional District’s June 18 board meeting for final approval.
