A 69-year-old Sicamous man was fined after making an illegal turn into Tim Hortons that wound up causing a two-vehicle collision.

The incident occurred at noon on Aug. 20 in the 800 block of the Trans-Canada Highway. Sicamous RCMP Sgt. Carl Vinet says the driver of a grey 2008 Ford pickup was travelling east on the Trans-Canada and decided make an illegal northbound turn across double yellow lines to enter the exit of the Tim Hortons parking lot.

The second vehicle involved, a brown 1998 Ford van, was travelling west at the time and the driver was unable to avoid the pickup truck.

“The force of the collision caused the truck to roll over onto its side and catch fire as the van entered the ditch,” says Vinet, adding both drivers suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were escorted to hospital for treatment.

Vinet credits a bystander for quickly extinguishing the fire. He says the 69-year-old driver of the pickup was fined for crossing double sold lines and for making an improper turn at an intersection.

Drugs and alcohol were not factors.
