Red Deer motorcyclist killed in collision

A 30-year old Red Deer, Alta. man died Friday morning after the motorcycle he was driving collided with the rear end of a semi trailer.

A 30-year old Red Deer, Alta. man died Friday morning after the motorcycle he was driving collided with the rear end of a semi trailer.

Sicamous RCMP Sgt. Carl Vinet says that at 9 a.m. on Aug. 19, officers were called to the scene of a serious motor vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway, east of the Malakwa Bridge.

As police and ambulance personnel were arriving at the scene, it was reported CPR was being administered to the motorcyclist, who later died from serious injuries.

Vinet says a police investigation found the motorcyclist had been travelling west, and had passed several vehicles before returning to the westbound lane.

“Upon doing so, it appears as though the tractor trailer in front of him had slowed down and possibly stopped to give an oncoming bus right of way onto the bridge,” says Vinet, adding the motorcyclist was unable to stop in time and collided with the rear of the trailer unit.

Vinet says the driver of the tractor trailer continued, as if unaware of the collision. Officers with Revelstoke Traffic Services later located the driver, and the trailer was seized as part of the investigation.

“A collision re-constructionist was called to the scene and is assisting with the investigation, which was taken over by the Trans-Canada East Traffic Services Unit,” says Vinet, noting the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
