So far Sicamous residents don’t appear too keen about the district’s latest curbside garbage collection offering.
The district recently mailed out surveys to residents to solicit feedback on a new proposal for mandatory curbside garbage and recyclable collection service.
As of last Wednesday, 168 of those surveys had been returned. The results were 130 against, 37 in favour, and one ‘I don’t know.’
With the latest proposal from the district, applicable properties (single family residences and mobile home parks) would pay $8 a month for pickup of one bag of garbage a month, plus unlimited recyclables every second week.
Residents at a public hearing had already spoken against an earlier proposal that would have provided pick-up of one bag of garbage a week, recyclables every second week, for $11.07 a month.
“What we had heard was a large amount of people were saying we only have one bag a month so, rather than working from the top down, we’re working from the bottom up, and this is the minimum that we could do to try to satisfy everyone,” Mayor Malcolm MacLeod had said of the current proposal.
Residents have until March 31 to complete the surveys and return them to the district.
