Sicamous' new roundabout has been recognized as an excellent example of engineered infrastructure.
The firm behind the roundabout's design, McElhanney Consulting Services Ltd. of Vancouver, took the top award for Design and Contract Preparation - Roads, at the 13th annual Deputy Minister's Consulting Engineers Awards.
McElhanney was honoured for their "exceptional work" on the roundabout at Highway 97A and Main Street.
"The Sicamous Roundabout was a complex project from an engineering standpoint, as the roundabout not only had to serve the transportation needs of the community, but the design also needed to include provisions for large custom vehicles and houseboats," said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. "The firm's ability to quickly analyze public feedback and incorporate it into their final design – all while sticking to the timeline – exemplifies the leadership we expect from our contractors."
Vancouver-False Creek MLA Sam Sullivan also commended McElhanney for their work.
"I understand this intersection was formerly known as 'The Octopus' for its numerous intersecting roadways, so I can appreciate that this new roundabout is a welcome improvement for the community of Sicamous," said Sullivan.
The roundabout was officially opened late 2016, and will see its first summer traffic this year.
