Speed limit change sought

Ongoing development on the south end of Sicamous has prompted district council to ask for a speed limit change on Highway 97A.

Ongoing development on the south end of Sicamous has prompted district council to ask for a speed limit change on Highway 97A.

Council agreed to write a letter to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, requesting the expansion of the 70-kilometre-an-hour speed limit on 97A beginning at Wolfe Street, so that it extends to the to the southern end of the district and Columbia Shuswap Regional District boundary.

“Given the existing development and the forthcoming designated and imminent development of the Sicamous Creek area, the 70km/hr speed zone should be expanded to address safety and proposed intersection design requirements,” states the district’s letter to the ministry.

The district request follows a request to the district by Mara Lakeside Resort developer Rick Collins who asked for a letter of support for an extension of the 70km/hr speed limit to “the second tangent on the curve in the highway south of the development.”

Along with improving safety, Collins notes the expanded reduced speed limit would assist in building a safer intersection for traffic accessing the resort, as well as the local area to the north.
