Update, Aug. 21, 9:10 a.m.

Police are now calling the death of a 49-year-old Sicamous man an accident, though related charges stand against a Sicamous woman.

In an Aug. 21 news release, Sicamous RCMP Sgt. Dubnyk states Troy Charlton, 49, and the person arrested following his death, 46-year-old Christina Laforge, "had been at the same social gathering at a Sicamous residence the evening before the accident."

Dubnyk goes on to state that after leaving the residence, Charlton was witnessed riding on the hood of a vehicle driven along Main Street by Laforge.

"When the vehicle came to a sudden stop, Charlton was thrown from the hood causing his fatal injuries," says Dubnyk.

At approximately 2:30 on Wednesday morning (Aug. 14), an officer on patrol found Charlton’s severely-injured body lying on the road. Charlton was immediately rushed to hospital in Salmon Arm, where he died from his injuries.

The sergeant emphasizes this was not a hit and run, and though Laforge was not with Charlton when his body was discovered by police.

Dubnyk says the patrolling officer had turned onto Main Street from Highway 97A and, while heading down Main Street, the officer witnessed a vehicle driven by Laforge travelling in the same lane towards him. The officer slowed down to a stop as the oncoming vehicle pulled into the correct lane in to pass. Preparing to stop the oncoming driver for a sobriety check, the officer noticed a person laying on the road. Dubnyk said the officer got out of their vehicle to check the person's condition. Meanwhile, Laforge had stopped half a block down the road and walked back to engage the officer.

Alcohol has been determined a factor in this incident.

Laforge was arrested on Aug. 15, and has since been charged with criminal negligence causing death and impaired driving causing death. She is scheduled to appear in Salmon Arm Provincial Court in mid-September.

Police continue to investigate, and ask that anyone with any related information contact the local detachment at 250-836-2878 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Sicamous RCMP continue to gather details relating to the death of a 49-year-old local man whose body was found last Wednesday lying on Main Street.

A local woman, Christina Laforge, 46, has since been charged in relation to the Aug. 14 death of Troy Charlton.

Laforge was arrested on Aug. 15, and has since been charged with criminal negligence causing death and impaired driving causing death. She is scheduled to appear in Salmon Arm Provincial Court in mid-September.

Initially, police suggested a vehicle may have been involved in the death. As of Monday, Aug. 20, Sicamous Sgt. Dave Dubnyk was reluctant to release further details, noting police are still gathering and sorting through statements in the investigation.

On Wednesday morning, at approximately 2:30 a.m., an officer on patrol found Charlton’s severely-injured body lying on the road. Charlton was immediately rushed to hospital in Salmon Arm, where he died from his injuries.

Alcohol was later confirmed to have been a factor in the incident that led to Charlton’s death.

Dubnyk said he may be able to release more details from the investigation later this week.
