Water quality advisory issued

District issues a water advisory with higher than normal turbidity levels detected in the drinking water supply.

The District of Sicamous has issued a water advisory with higher than normal turbidity levels having been detected in the drinking water supply.

A bulletin issued by the district on Wednesday, Nov. 22, states the higher turbidity levels, caused by weather changes, excess running, flooding and lake turnover, may impair the effectiveness of the disinfection treatment system.

"If disinfection is impaired, disease-causing microorganisms may escape into the water distribution system resulting in an increased risk of intestinal illness," the bulletin states, adding people with underdeveloped or weaken immune systems, infants and the elderly may be at increased risk. For those people especially, and anyone wishing to take extra precaution, the district recommends bringing all water to a boil for one minute, or else use bottled water for drinking, making ice or brushing teeth.

The advisory remains in effect until further notice. Anyone wanting more information may contact the district at 250-836-2477, or district public works at 250-836-4105.
