We are deeply saddened to announce that Betty Durocher passed away on January 31, 2012 at Shuswap Lake General Hospital from complications after a stroke.

Betty is survived by her husband of 49 years, Rolland, their children: Carol-Ann (David), Gordon (Jan) and Nancy (Steve) and their grandchildren: Dawn, Randy, Alexandra and Isaac. Left to grieve is her large and extended family; especially her brother Ken (Helen), brother-in-law Norman (Mary), much loved aunt Hazel and her favourite uncle Leo (Margaret). She was predeceased by her parents and uncle: Aimo and Karin Makela and Fred Davis.

Wife, mother and friend to all, she will be sorely missed. She was an amazing person who was dedicated to her family, friends and community.

Everyone found a reason to drop in to visit their “Auntie Betty”. Her sense of humour was infectious and her warm hospitality was legendary. Betty was happiest when hosting an event, throwing a party or planning special surprise for someone. There was always room at the table for unexpected guests and a warm bed for weary travellers. Summers spent house boating on Shuswap Lake were some of the most memorable times with her family.

Betty was involved in many volunteer organizations over the years and most recently: Salmon Arm Toastmasters, Eagle Valley Arts Council, Sicamous Museum Society and the BC Arts Council. Her contribution to community service was recognized with many awards including the Elspeth Rogers Life Membership for Kinettes (1983) and was a co-recipient for the Sicamous Mayor’s Award for Community Service (2006).

She was an enthusiastic host of other community events which she either chaired or volunteered to help behind the scenes. The love of family and friends, a commitment to the Shuswap community and the joy she took from the company of others is what she will be most remembered for.

Throughout her life, Betty made everyone around her feel welcomed and warm and happy. Her legacy is having created so many happy memories for all of us who were blessed enough to know her.

The family is grateful for the kindness shown to Betty during her stay in hospital and for the ongoing support for Rolland in the days ahead.

Please join with us for a Celebration of Life on Saturday, April 28th 2012 at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 705 Cherry Avenue, Sicamous, BC V0E 2V0 at 1:30 p.m. There will be a reception to follow service.
