August 6, 1938 – October 6, 2018
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Frances Eileen Egin (nee Dickson), beloved mother, aunt, and grandmother, on October 6, 2018, two months after her 80th birthday.
Fran was born on August 6, 1938, in Brantford, Ontario, and had one older sister, Betty Jean. She excelled in school, graduated a year early, and was hired as a secretary at Johnson’s Wax.
In 1964 she married Herbert Egin, a recent German immigrant. They moved to Toronto, then lived and worked in Germany for a year and travelled around Europe before moving out west to Calgary in 1967.
There, Fran worked in the tax department at Mobil Oil while Herb worked at Eatons. In 1971, they decided to start a new life; they bought a piece of property in Craigellachie, BC, where they built four A-frame bungalows and ran them as a hotel business. In 1975 they started to build Beardale Castle Miniatureland; a tourist attraction featuring animated displays and numerous hand-built villages with model trains. Over the years, Fran ran the business while Herb worked on the displays.
In 2005, Herb’s failing health forced them to sell Beardale, and they moved to Salmon Arm to retire and be closer to their grandchildren.
After retiring, Fran enjoyed spending time with her two granddaughters, and also volunteered for a number of years at Askews Foods, shopping for home-bound seniors.
Herb predeceased her in 2009, and in 2017 she moved to Lakeside Manor.
Fran was practical, kind, and friendly; she loved her family, cats, games, and was always up for a good joke. She will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her daughter Michelle (Peter), and granddaughters Maja and Monika.
A memorial tea will be held on Sunday, October 21, 2:00 – 4:00 pm at Bowers Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Shuswap branch of the BCSPCA.
