January 28, 1929 - January 29, 2022
In loving memory ~
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Peggy Molly Zagar.
Peggy was born in Kamsack, Saskatchewan, January 28, 1929 and passed away peacefully at Vernon Jubilee Hospital on January 29, 2022 with family by her side. Our mom, along with her younger sister Viola, and their mother, Nellie Moojelski made the big move to the Okanagan when our mom was 13 years old. They settled in Penticton, Summerland and Naramata.
Mom worked at the brewery in Princeton, BC, where she met and married our dad Paul (Pi) Zagar on December 7, 1951. They had four children, Phillip, Patricia, Joanne and Alan. They made the move to Sicamous in 1957 when our dad worked on the Rogers Pass. Our dad was tragically killed in an automobile accident, August 3, 1967.
Mom was left to raise four children with no money and no support. It was tough times in those days. Welfare was the only option at that time.
Our mom was able to rise above all this and was hired by the Government Liquor Board and was a cashier at different liquor stores: Salmon Arm, Enderby and Sicamous. She was the first female to be hired and it wasn't without its problems. They tried to remove her, but she stood her ground and with the help of her union she remained in the position. The world wasn't ready for a woman working in the government liquor stores quite yet!
Mom loved animals of all kinds. She especially had a great love for cats. She also enjoyed feeding all the birds, including the crows. She loved her garden, baking and cooking and having her children and grandchildren come to visit her. Her door was always open for coffee and a baked good. She may even serve you a glass of whiskey or two. She enjoyed having her neighbours and friends drop by regularly for a coffee or a drink.
She loved Sicamous and the simple life of living there. She lived in Sicamous for 64 years. At one time she knew all the names of everyone in town. Our mom was one of a kind. She was determined, stubborn, feisty and very independent. She was honest and a straight shooter. She always had that smile and little laugh with the twinkle in her eye.
Peggy leaves behind her four children, Phil (Gerda), Patricia (John), Joanne (Jim) and Alan (Cheri). Her five grandchildren, Tanis, Paul, Colin, Jordan and Andrew and her sister Vi of Calgary, her seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Our mom will be missed by so many, and there is no doubt she will leave a lasting impression on many, as she was just that kind of gal!
There will be no service by request. If you so desire please make a donation to the SPCA in Peggy Zagar's memory. Mom will be laid to rest with her husband Pi in Princeton, BC.
Peace at last Mom.
