LETTER: Focus on Trans-Canada should be a priority

In her letter in the Oct. 3 Observer, Sarah Weaver makes a very good point, “Underpass not the city’s greatest need.”

If we commit the $323,000 per year that we have available now for the underpass, every other project for the next 30 years such as an outdoor pool, recreation centre, sewage treatment plant upgrade or relocation will have to be funded through tax increases.

Speakers for the city argue that the Lakeshore level crossing could be the site of a tragic accident.

No doubt about it, an underpass would be safer, but then again there has never been an accident that I know of on the Salmon Arm level crossings and I was born here quite some time ago.

The Trans-Canada is another matter. Just last Monday, Oct. 1, as was noted in the Oct. 3 version of the Salmon Arm Observer, “Three hospitalized after highway crash” at the TCH and 30th.

And, as a matter of fact, there was a second collision at that same intersection later on in the afternoon.

There have been tragic accidents on the Trans-Canada, including one in which a high school classmate of mine was killed in an accident at Alexander and the TCH.

I agree with you, Sarah. The underpass is not the city’s greatest need, nor is it the city’s greatest safety hazard.
