Boaters warned to watch for debris

Boaters urged to watch for floating and partially submerged debris and dead-heads.

The Shuswap Watershed Council (SWC) is reminding boaters to watch for floating and partially submerged debris and dead-heads.

“This time of year often sees a flush of material into the lakes,” says Erin Vieira, program manager for the SWC.

As the lake levels rise in spring, logs, root-wads, firewood and other large debris can wash off beaches into rivers and lakes. The debris can be especially difficult to spot in dim light or wavy conditions.

“Boaters need to be on the look out for it,” said Vieira. “Anyone doing tow-sports (waterskiing or tubing)  definitely needs to look carefully.”
