Eagles down Heat and top Rockies in weekend play

The Sicamous Eagles didn’t let a 4-3 loss Wednesday spoil their weekend.

The Sicamous Eagles didn’t let a 4-3 loss Wednesday spoil their weekend.

The loss happened during away action against guests the Princeton Posse. In this closely matched contest, Princeton potted the first and only goal of the first period. Sicamous’ response didn’t come until after a second Posse goal in the second frame, in the form of a power-play goal from Steven Powers, aided by James Stoski and Nathan Grieve. A second Sicamous goal, this time from Brett Trofanenko tied things up going into the third period. The Posse put in two goals early in the third frame. Powers provided Sicamous’ final marker, assisted by Grieve, and was named the game’s third star.

The Eagles had back-to-back games Friday and Saturday against the Chase Heat. Sicamous won both with scores of 5-1 and 8-3.

The Friday game was an away contest. Sicamous was first on the board with an early, first-period goal from Jagger Bowles (Brett Bretitkreuz with the assist). The next goal of the evening came in the first 18 seconds of the second period from teammate Corbin Marcotte, assisted by Brendan Devries and Taekema. Sicamous took the 2-0 lead into the third frame, when goals came from Powers, Trofanenko and Brendon Wilde.

In Saturday’s game, the Eagles dominated the first and second periods, while the last frame was a wash for both teams. Connor Fynn and Powers provided the only markers in the first period, aided by Bowles, Daniel Anhorn and Mike Piderman.

Taekema picked up scoring early in the second frame, followed seconds later with an unassisted goal from Bowles. The remaining Sicamous goals of the period, and the evening, came from Devries (2) Wilde, and Matt Reed, with assists by Marcotte, Taekema, Fynn, Bowles and Piderman.

On Sunday, Feb. 12, the Eagles were in Invermere where they toppled the Columbia Valley Rockies with a 9-4 win.

The Eagles again dominated the first frame. Goals from Trofanenko, Wilde and Fynn gave Sicamous a 3-1 lead going into the second period.

Brad Crump and Devries added two more to Sicamous’ tally in the second frame, followed in the third frame with goals from Fynn, Wilde, Tarren Cavanaugh and Trofanenko.

The Eagles’ next game is on Feb. 17, when they take on the Kelowna Chiefs in Kelowna.
