Despite the grey, rainy backdrop to their races, Salmon Arm’s school cross-country teams made a good showing in the final event of the season, the Cross-Country Championships in Nanaimo Nov. 3 to 4.

Students from both Salmon Arm Secondary campuses, as well as Shuswap Middle School, entered the championships in three teams, putting a junior girls’, senior girls’ and senior boys’ team into the competition.

“It was a great weekend, we drove down Friday and previewed the course, and went for a team dinner together before the competitions. Saturday was rainy, though thankfully not as much as anticipated,” said coach Dave Van Bergeyk. “It was a typically wet cross-country provincials on the Island. It was a good day, the kids ran well. Even though the conditions were a bit slippery they had good results.”

The junior girls’ team placed highest in their division out of the three Salmon Arm teams, taking fourth place overall when their team member’s placements were calculated together. This top-four finish in the championships comes shortly after the team finished first overall at the Okanagan Valley Championships Oct. 23 in Stake Lake.

“The junior girls’ were kind of our strongest team throughout the season, fourth place in provincials was even better than we were expecting,” Van Bergeyk said.
