B.C. speed skaters converged at Shaw Centre over the weekend for a meet hosted by the Salmon Arm Ice Breakers.

The Ice Breakers’ Emily Klapstein said 38 registered skaters, representing Salmon Arm, Vernon, Kamloops, Kelowna and Williams Lake, took part in the meet, while a similar number of volunteers were involved with putting on the race.

“It was very fast racing, and some personal best times were set by Salmon Arm skaters,” said Klapstein.

Ice Breaker Peter Ely will be representing the club and the Interior Region at the BC Winter Games in Quesnel on Feb. 23 and 24. Klapstein said following the Games, the Ice Breakers have four members competing in the BC Short Track Championships on March 9 and 10 in Abbotsford.

“The Salmon Arm Icebreakers are always welcoming new skaters of all ages and abilities, from Learn to Skate to Masters skaters,” said Klapstein.

The Ice Breakers practice Wednesdays and Fridays until mid-March, and start up again in September. For information, email s.a.speedskating@gmail.com.
