After three years of flying with the Sicamous Eagles, head coach Nick Deschenes announced he’ll be leaving the nest.

In media release on April 26, the team announced his departure from the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League team with disappointment.

“Nick started with us in 2021 and has certainly helped raise the profile of the Sicamous Eagles,” the team said in the release.

Though they were looking forward to continued success with Deschenes after leading the league for much of this season, his demanding work schedule, family commitments and the travel time to and from Sicamous prompted the “difficult choice” to focus on balancing life and work closer to home.

Deschenes, who joined the team in 2021 after a year-and-a-half of coaching the Summerland Steam, was named Coach of the Year for the Doug Birks Division for the 2022/23 season.

Eagles assistant coach Rob Sutherland said they don’t have a replacement yet, but the job will be posted in the next few days.

“We want to thank Coach Nick for his time with the Eagles, and want to wish him all the best,” the release concluded, adding the tag line #OnceAnEagleAlwaysAnEagle.
