Free household hazardous waste disposal days are coming to Sorrento and Sicamous.

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) will be hosting its Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sorrento Elementary School parking lot, 1135 Passchendaele Road, on Saturday, July 15. Another will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Finlayson Park on Saturday, July 22.

The CSRD defines household hazardous waste as any waste from your home that is dangerous or which you have reason to believe could be hazardous. Waste materials accepted for drop-off at these events include: paint, batteries, oil, antifreeze, flammables, poisons, corrosives, adhesives, grease/tar, gasoline/kerosene, pesticides, fertilizers, devices containing mercury, and pool chemicals. Items not accepted include: insulation spraying cylinders, propane tanks, needles/sharps, ammunition, weapons, explosives, and radioactive material.

For safe transport, the CSRD asks that participants pack household hazardous waste in a box to avoid spilling, and to group similar chemicals together, and secure lids to ensure containers are not leaking.

In addition to household hazardous waste, light bulbs, small appliances (toasters, blenders, coffee makers) and electronics (computers, radios, gaming devices) will be accepted at the two events.

The Round-Up events are for residents only, at no cost to drop-off accepted items. No commercial or institutional hazardous waste will be accepted.
