South Canoe residents recently marked their third year of being part of a FireSmart Neighbourhood.
“With our qualifying as a FireSmart Neighbourhood for the third year, in 2022, we were presented with a new sign that can now be updated annually with a circular date sticker,” said South Canoe FireSmart board member Len Lazzarotto.
To be recognized as a FireSmart Neighbourhood, the first step is to contact the local FireSmart representative, who will complete an assessment and create a plan that identifies locally agreed-upon solutions the neighbourhood can implement.
A neighbourhood FireSmart committee maintains the plan and tracks its progress.
The neighbourhood would hold annual events dedicated to a local FireSmart project. The community is required to invest in local FireSmart efforts, and an annual report must be submitted to FireSmart Canada documenting continuing compliance with the program.
The Salmon Arm Fire Department’s Carmen Guidos explained the FireSmart Neighbourhood Recognition Program was designed to help neighbourhoods unite towards the common goal of reducing the risk of wildfires impacting their homes, by working together as a group to FireSmart their homes and neighbourhoods.
