Recreation society already doing fine

On Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011, I attended a meeting at the Red Barn in regards to Sicamous Area Parks, Recreation and Open Space Plan.

On page 40-41 of the plan package, quoted was “Sicamous would have an opportunity to potentially restructure the arena management,” and “it would allow Sicamous to absorb some facility management, maintenance and contract administrator functions.” What does this mean exactly? Why was the Sicamous arena the only organization to be targeted? Why would the mayor and the district council put so much time and energy in this plan when more serious issues should be addressed? How about addressing the fact more and more families are leaving Sicamous and surrounding areas due to no jobs. Attend to matters of greater importance.

The Sicamous Arena is presently governed by the Sicamous & District Recreation Society. They hired an arena manager, Wayne March, who has made numerous improvements to the mechanics of the building and the rink, to keep the arena up to code. It is a building a community can be proud of. He works diligently with anyone concerning the usage of the arena. Besides, the improvements on the arena, he has also organized the Show and Shine Car Show and what about that gym? State of the art equipment for the community.

Numerous groups are now using the meeting halls. He has shown exceptional effort in working with the Sicamous Hockey School. As well, another hockey school has come aboard.

The Eagle Valley Sports and Leisure has used the arena on a number of occasions for skating events and the Snow Days. Those are just a few of the activities that take place here. The arena is running smoothly and there is an increase of usage.

My question is why try to fix something that is not broken?
