For a small community, Sicamous has a huge spirit when it comes to events.
Evidence of that started with the annual Canada Day events. Many volunteers should be very proud of the super job they did.
The all-day events included live music by Scarecrow in the Band on the Barge concert at the park, and art exhibits from Eagle Valley Brush and Palette Club and Eagle Valley Arts Council. To treat the taste buds, there was the popular Lions Club strawberry pancake breakfast. The day ended with the best-ever fireworks display. All of this was just the beginning for the July long weekend.
Saturday, July 2, saw the sun shine down on the Third Annual Show and Shine Car Show in Finlayson Park. This event is put on by the Sicamous and District Recreation Centre Society. Hats off to Wayne March and his crew from the society, plus George Ross, with the vintage car club, and the many volunteers who gave endless hours of help. Major thank yous go out to the local merchants who supported the event with donations of merchandise, gift baskets, houseboat trips, tickets, giveaway bags – the list goes on and on.
Once again the Lions Club came through with their popular chuckwagon pancake breakfast in the park. Organizers for the show and shine were astounded at the attendance of 197 cars, 17 vendors and live music provided by Julie Robinson. Additional food outlets included the arena concession, D Dutchmen Dairy ice cream and the mini do-nut booth. The Sicamous Eagles beer gardens added refreshment for the more than 1,600 visitors who attended.
Without the volunteers who gave their time for this event it would not have been possible.
The Sicamous and District Recreation Centre gives its thanks. Bouquets of roses to our district office for opening the park up for the event and keeping the sprinklers off.
Inside, the recreation centre, the Sicamous Keepsake Kwilters set up one of the finest quilt shows ever on July 1 and 2. Twenty ladies did all the quilting for the huge display of some 200 beautiful items, from quilts to wall hangings and table runners.
Their display filled the dry ice area. This was exceptional as there are a lot of ladies that love the show and shine, but found having the quilt show an added treat. Ladies you are awesome.
July 2 ended with the Louisiana Hayride concert inside the recreation centre. Sicamous came out in full force to support the Hayride, and what a show it was. They came, they sang and they rocked our barn. Hats off to Louisiana Hayride Gil Risling, (vocals Roy Orbinson), Lori Risling, (producer and narrator), Sharon Reid, ( Patsy Cline), William Brookfield, (keyboard, vocals and guitar), Adam Fitzpatrick, (Elvis). Sicamous’s very own Mike Melinchuk, (vocals, guitar and stand-up bass), and last, but not least, our local EZ Rock morning man Patrick Ryley, (vocals Hank Williams).
Huge thank yous to all of the cast for sharing the legendary music that will never be forgotten.
Truly an evening to remember.
Plans are already in the process for next year’s show and shine … It will be bigger and better.
The Sturgis North burnout event, held July 15, was exceptional. The town really pulled together to make this event a huge success. Once again, the turnout of volunteers is to be commended for all of their hard work – every one of you is such a great ambassador for our town.
Hardly any mosquitoes attended the burnout. The district crews did an awesome job mowing, trimming, and cleaning the entire downtown core and keeping the bugs down. The town looked beautiful. Thanks to everyone at the district office.
Sicamous is a small town, with a small group of individuals and volunteers who have heart and spirit as big as all outdoors. They just keep bringing great events to our town.
