Hockey highlights Canada Day

New this year is the first annual Dekes and Bogeys Road Hockey Tournament.

Canada Day Weekend in Sicamous this year is one you won’t want to miss!

Every year, local community groups come together to do a fantastic job celebrating our country. This year will be no different, however there will be more events for locals and visitors to enjoy.

New this year is the first annual Dekes and Bogeys Road Hockey Tournament. This event will feature eight different age groups ranging from five years to a 50+ division, with  eight teams per division.

The teams can have a maximum of seven players each and is a four-on-four format. Cost is $100 per team. The event starts at 8 a.m. on July 1, and will run all day with the finals for each division being held at 4:30.

To get your team registered, contact Jamie Sherlock, Recreation and Events Manager, at the district office at 250-836-2477.

The road hockey tournament will take place on Main Street from Riverside Avenue to Shuswap Avenue. These sections of Main Street will be shut at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 30, and will reopen at approximately 9 p.m. on Friday, July 1.

This event came about after several folks were talking about the number of local hockey players who have gone on to play semi-professional and professional hockey. Sicamous is proud to say there is 15 and counting as of today. Notable names in the NHL right now are Shea Weber and Cody Franson. However, there are others, such as Ron and Rob Flockhart, Dale Purinton, John Craighead, Kris Beech and Colin Fraser, who has won the Stanley Cup three times during his career.

Other notable names from the community are Cain Franson, Stewart Coyle, Adam and Ross Breitkreuz, Adrian Veideman, Kris Hogg and Andrew Kozek. All have won some impressive hardware.

While the guest list is still being confirmed, 10 of the 15 of above mentioned names are coming.

Other notable NHL celebrities who will be in Sicamous for the weekend are Larry Melnyk, Doug Bodger, Bobby Bourne, Dave Semenko and Kelly Hrudey. All will be involved with the weekend festivities.

The District of Sicamous will be unveiling their new portable stage this weekend as well. The stage will be positioned in front of the traffic circle on Main Street.

For an events schedule for July 1 and 2, see page 12.

As with any community event, volunteers are the backbone of the success. If you or anyone you may know is interested in helping out, please contact Jamie Sherlock at the district office at 250-836-2477.
